Now that the NFL Draft is in the review mirror, it’s time to update the AFC team needs. With the draft over, we will see the signing of undrafted free agents as well as the signing of free-agents for the next several weeks. To see a list of free agents (we included some of the more notable defensive free agents too), see this link.
For purposes of this week’s article, what follows is the summary of each teams’ roster needs in the AFC from seven weeks ago, five weeks ago, and an evaluation of how teams did in the draft. Besides The Fantasy Greek listing players who have been added through free agency (those in bold were signed within the past five weeks), The Fantasy Greek notes in order of importance what The Fantasy Greek thinks is each teams’ positional needs and if they have been met (by a strikethrough the positional need). Positional needs in bold print were added right before the draft.
Also, The Fantasy Greek lists for you each of the teams draft picks with our evaluation of how the teams did drafting. We have considered both how each team did drafting (the value of players picked) as well as filling those all important positional needs. If a team seemed to “reach” with its draft picks, i.e., drafting a player in the second round when a player had fifth round value for example, we tried to account for it by providing a “raw score.” The “raw score” averages the value of players drafted. The rank shows how each team did among the others in the league in terms of the raw score. If a team drafted higher valued players, the raw score will reflect it, and vice-versa. The lower the raw score, the better value the team received in terms of its overall picks.
Please note, this is but one view of how teams did drafting. Keep in mind, there is a divergence of opinion among the football community as to the value of players, pre-draft. If you sit in a room with those people who make a living analyzing and providing college draft information, you will quickly see that people do not necessarily agree. Indeed, besides the popular media outlets who provided their own draft boards, top-100, etc., there are thirty-two different NFL teams with thirty-two different college scouting staffs that differ as to the value of players. Some teams placed a lot of value in the private workouts they had with each player compared to the draft value assigned to the player. No one will really know how a team did drafting until three or four years from now when we look back to see which drafted players are still on the team, and which drafted players are contributing to the offense, defense, and/or special teams.
Just remember, teams approach the NFL draft differently. Some teams will pick for need, some for value, and in the early rounds, some teams will go for the impact player regardless of need.
Please, don’t forget to post your comments and questions in the chat box below. They are very much appreciated.
Last season, the Bills were awful defending the rush, one of the top-five worst in fantasy football, an honor they held in 2010 as well. What’s more, the Bills pass defense had its share of problems too. The Bills would do well to improve their defense at the line of scrimmage and in the middle of the field. This could only help their pass defense. The Bills would have likely won more games last season but for the fact that the Bills defense couldn’t keep opposing teams out of the end zone. With wide receiver Stevie Johnson back in the fold, the Bills should look to add a quality No. 2 wide-out. The Bills’ protection of Fitzpatrick continued to be lacking. If the Bills can’t re-sign Scott Chandler, the tight-end position will be a position of need.
Top-Positional Needs: LB, DE, OT, OG, TE, WR, CB, TE
Free Agency Signings
| Position, Player | Former Team |
| DE Mario Williams | Texans |
| DE Mark Anderson | Patriots |
UPDATE (March 24, 2012): The Bills made the biggest defensive signing of free agency by signing former Texans DE Marion Williams. Then, the Bills solidified any needs at the position by book-ending it with DE Mark Anderson of the Patriots. The Bills look to have drastically improved their defensive unit with these two signings. Indeed, this should make the Bills defensive unit a solid DST2 in fantasy football, with sleeper potential, and should dramatically improve the Bills as a team within the division. While we still feel that the Bills may look to improve other parts of their defense where they can, they may start to look to fill offensive areas of need first, such as along the offensive line and at the wide-receiver position. In terms of re-signing some of their own players, the Bills re-signed TE Scott Chandler shortly after the writing of the original AFC Needs article, and then today re-signed RB Tashard Choice.
PRE-DRAFT UPDATE (April 25, 2012): Little has changed since our last update. We like the Bills to address the offensive line in the upcoming draft, and wide receiver shortly thereafter. We’ve added tight-end and cornerback as positions that could be addressed later in the draft for added depth, and for that hidden diamond in the rough.
DRAFT PICKS:
| Round | Draft Pick | Pick | Overall |
| 1 | CB Stephon Gilmore | 10 | 10 |
| 2 | T Cordy Glenn | 9 | 41 |
| 3 | WR TJ Graham | 6 | 69 |
| 4 | OLB Nigel Bradham | 10 | 105 |
| 4 | CB Ron Brooks | 29 | 124 |
| 5 | T Zebrie Sanders | 9 | 144 |
| 5 | ILB Tank Carder | 12 | 147 |
| 6 | G Mark Asper | 8 | 178 |
| 7 | K John Potter | 44 | 251 |
Raw Score: 4.22
Rank: 9th
POST-DRAFT UPDATE: With the exception of adding another tight-end, which was not a priority, the Bills did a great job of hitting two home-runs with their first two picks. T Cordy Glenn had first round value and the Bills were able to draft him in the second round. T Zebrie Sanders, a player who could have been picked earlier in the draft, was also a great addition in the fifth round. The Bills took late round fliers on their last two picks but much like fantasy football, that was the appropriate time to take a chance on players the Bills saw something in. We’re not sure why the Bills valued WR TJ Graham over other wide-receivers available in the fourth-round of the draft, but we’ll know soon enough. The Bills look to have made marked improvement on both the defensive side and offensive side of the football this off-season.
The Dolphins defense had its moments last season where it looked like one of the better defenses in the league, especially their rush defense. Still, the Dolphins pass defense was beaten at critical times in critical games. The Dolphins will look to replace some bodies along the defensive line. In 2011, the Dolphins found an answer for their ground game — Reggie Bush. RB Daniel Thomas did struggle as a rookie, but to some degree, this should be expected as the professional football game is particularly difficult for rookie running backs due to the pounding they take over the course of a season. That said, the Dolphins experienced a carousel at the quarterback position. The Dolphins failed to address this problem last off-season in a meaningful way. Expect the Dolphins to make getting a quarterback a top-priority whether through free agency or the draft, especially since they have one of the best receivers in the league in Brandon Marshall. Then, look for the Dolphins to try to beef up their offensive line if possible. Lastly, with the retirement of Jason Taylor, the Dolphins will look to score a good linebacker.
Top-Positional Needs: OT, WR, G, LB, QB, DT, S, TE
Free Agency Signings
| Position, Player | Former Team |
| G Arts Hicks | Browns |
| CB Richard Marshall | Cardinals |
| QB David Garrard | Free Agent |
| WR Legedu Naanee | Panthers |
| LB Gary Guyton | Patriots |
| S Tyrell Johnson | Vikings |
UPDATE (MARCH 24, 2012): These are not the signings the Dolphins faithful expected at this point in free agency. Besides missing out on a big quarterback free agent signing, whether Peyton Manning, Matt Flynn or Alex Smith, the Dolphins released both WR Brandon Marshall and S Yeremiah Bell due to salary cap issues. In sum, the Dolphins lack of making a splash in free agency hurt their team. Instead of taking a big step forward in terms of front office philosophy, it seems to be more of the same and the impression it has left with us outsiders looking in is that this is a front office genuinely out of touch with the times. With the signing of David Garrard, the Dolphins immediate need becomes linebacker, where they are thin at the position, as well as at the safety position. By trading Brandon Marshall to the Bears, the Dolphins have no true No. 1 wide-receiver and will need to address the position if they can. Besides RB Reggie Bush, the Dolphins are looking like a fantasy football wasteland right now even though one of their receivers should get a bump in value if for no other reason than the Dolphins will need to throw the ball to someone.
PRE-DRAFT UPDATE (APRIL 25, 2012): As much as the Dolphins will be tempted to draft a quarterback early in the draft, it would likely be better to wait till later in the draft, even the second round or third round. Needs at the wide receiver position and along the offensive line just seem more pressing.
DRAFT PICKS:
| Round | Draft Pick | Pick | Overall |
| 1 | QB Ryan Tannehill | 8 | 8 |
| 2 | T Jonathan Martin | 10 | 42 |
| 3 | DE Olivier Vernon | 9 | 72 |
| 3 | TE Michael Egnew | 15 | 78 |
| 4 | RB Lamar Miller | 2 | 97 |
| 5 | LB Josh Kaddu | 20 | 155 |
| 6 | WR BJ Cunningham | 13 | 183 |
| 7 | DT Kheeston Randall | 8 | 215 |
| 7 | WR Rishard Matthews | 20 | 227 |
Raw Score: 3.44
Rank: 3rd
POST-DRAFT UPDATE: The Dolphins went ahead and drafted QB Ryan Tannehill with their first pick. The wisdom of the move will play itself out in the future. In the meantime, the die has been cast. Whether it was due to the fact that the Dolphins missed out on signing one of the other free agent quarterbacks, so be it. It is what it is. However, the Dolphins get some great value in drafting T Jonathan Martin, another arguably first round talent, in Round 2 and then did a steady job of picking players who likely should have been drafted earlier than when the Dolphins picked them. TE Michael Egnew and RB Lamar Miller could have a chance to contribute early. It’s unclear whether WR BJ Cunningham and WR Rishard Matthews are the answers to the Dolphins getting the passing game going, but the Dolphins need whatever help they can get. Regardless of how well the Dolphins may have drafted, there is still a good chance the Dolphins offense struggles this season. We are also surprised that the Dolphins did not add a safety in the draft given the departure of Yeremiah Bell.
The Jets likely wanted a ‘do-over’ of the 2011 season after their Week 17 game. The Jets obviously had one of the better defenses in the league, but it could have been better. The Jets will likely look to add a rush stuffer and another pass rusher. While the Jets had two of the best corners in the league, their deep protection was lacking. The Jets offense struggled, especially in the passing game. While calls of Mark Sanchez’s head have been heard, it’s hard to imagine that the Jets would give up on the young QB unless an opportunity presented itself that they just couldn’t pass up. The Jets will also need to sign or draft a wide receiver as Plaxico Burress may not be back. By the way, the offensive line is still not getting any younger and some depth to bolster this group will likely be considered.

Free Agency Signings/Trades
| Position, Player | Former Team |
| WR Chaz Schillens | Raiders |
| S LaRon Landry | Redskins |
| QB Tim Tebow | Broncos |
UPDATE (MARCH 24, 2012): While an injury risk, the addition of S LaRon Landry filled a glaring need at a position that was not a strong one for the Jets. Still, the Jets need help at the position having released two of their safeties before free agency began. The signing of Chaz Schilens was a bit of a head-scratcher only insofar as a replacement for Plaxico Burress. While maybe not the big play game changer he was in the past, Burress was still a viable red zone target. Now, unless the Jets are content on being more of a ground and pound team, it is still a position of need. As for Tim Tebow, love him or hate him, he will certainly add a new dimension to the offense. Of course, this is not a ringing endorsement of Mark Sanchez. Indeed, one would be hard-pressed to even consider Sanchez a QB2 in fantasy football at this juncture.
PRE-DRAFT UPDATE (APRIL 25, 2012): The Jets have had had that ‘big tough guy’ image for quite some time now. But if they want to do the right thing in this draft, the Jets need to shore up an offensive line that is getting old, and was absolutely porous in pass coverage. A good wide receiver would be a plus.
DRAFT PICKS:

Raw Score: 4.375
Rank: 14th(T)
POST-DRAFT UPDATE: Well, the Jets couldn’t help themselves but to draft DE Quinton Coples when he fell to them with the sixteenth pick of the NFL draft. WR Stephen Hill was a great addition for a receiving core that has grown thin since the release of Plaxico Burress. The additions at safety were a plus. However, the Jets made no effort to improve their offensive line but for a late round pick. This may not bode well should a rash of injuries strike the offensive line. RB Terrance Gannaway gives the Jets some nice depth at the position.
Even though the Patriots had a darn-good season, their defense struggled defending opposing wide-receivers. Their rush defense played well towards the end of the season and into the playoffs. As the Patriots have a decent set of young corners and free safeties, look for the Patriots to be in the market for an outside edge pass rusher and any player that can beef up their secondary. While the twin-towers of TE Rob Gronkowski and TE Aaron Hernandez were, for the most part, the Patriots offense in 2011, since the departure of Randy Moss, the Patriots have lacked a true deep receiving threat. Another receiving weapon for Tom Brady will likely be a top priority. The Patriots will add offensive linemen to protect their most valuable asset.

UPDATE (MARCH 24, 2012): The Patriots very quietly, made the most free agent signings among all of the AFC teams and began addressing every position of need right now. Interestingly, the Patriots have ten wide receivers on their roster. As such, while we expect Tom Brady to retain his fantasy football value, there is a potential for many of their most recent signings to get washed out of the fantasy football mix. With RB BenJarvus Green-Elllis signing with the Bengals, RB Stevan Ridley becomes the front runner to get the majority of rushes as well as goal line looks. The Patriots are in a good place and seem to have the pick of the free agency litter and should be in a good position, as usual, to work the draft to their advantage while picking up good players and trading down for more draft picks. G Robert Gallery was a nice addition to give added protection to the Patriots greatest asset.
PRE-DRAFT UPDATE (APRIL 25, 2012): Since the last update, T Matt Light retired. Suddenly, there is a need, maybe not pressing, at the position. Still, the Patriots would seem best served to look early to strengthening the secondary and then turn their attention to the offensive line. One way or another, the Patriots should do well in the draft with their picks.
DRAFT PICKS:

Raw Score: 4.857
Rank: 27th
POST-DRAFT UPDATE: It was a coup for the Patriots to draft DE Chandler Jones and ILB Dont’a Hightower as they did. For once, the Partiots didn’t move back in the draft but moved up to get Hightower. After that, however, the Patriots seemed to reach a bit with two of their next four picks. CB Alfonzo Dennard seemed to be a steal so late in the draft. WR Jeremy Ebert was a bit of a head-scratcher as the Patriots now have ten wide-receivers on their roster. This draft was about improving the defense for the Patriots. But, not addressing the offensive line in any way, shape or form through the draft is troubling.
The Bengals look solid at quarterback with Andy Dalton, and at wide-receiver, with their young corp. of wide-receivers, especially A.J. Green. A lot depends on whether Jerome Simpson and Andre Caldwell remain part of the team. It’s time to protectDalton. Cedric Benson looked beaten by the end of last season and the Bengals will likely try to make a splash in free agency, or the draft, at the RB position. The Bengals defense was pretty good last season but it has to be better in the AFC North. The Bengals will likely focus beefing up their defense including their corners and safeties this off-season as well as look to add a pass rushing threat.

UPDATE (MARCH 24, 2012): The signing of free agent RB BenJarvus Green-Ellis seemed to make Bengals nation happy even though The Fantasy Greek thought Michael Bush was ear-marked for the starting job right before free agency began. Whether Green-Ellis can be the starting back for the Benagls for an entire season remains to be seen. Still, it was a good signing. Whether the Bengals still try to add another RB remains to be seen, and while it would be nice, it is not the most important position right now. Because the Bengals released both WR Andre Caldwell (who signed with the Broncos) and WR Jerome Simpson, it’s unclear whether Brandon Tate and Jordan Shipley can contribute. So, while the Bengals could seek to add to the position, it’s not one of immediate need. The offensive line, on the other hand, is one of immediate need as the Bengals are thin at guard and currently have no back-up center.
PRE-DRAFT UPDATE (APRIL 25, 2012): The Bengals seem to recognize too that the offensive line is one of immediate need. The left side of the line is older and depth is needed. Yet, it may be tough to pass up on one of the top receivers, if available, in the first round. The tight-end and running back positions were added for purposes of adding depth. This is a young team that could be on the rise through this draft.

POST-DRAFT UPDATE: The Bengals did an amazing job drafting this year! The Bengals were able to almost, with every pick, acquire players that should have been drafted a round or two, earlier. The Bengals drafted players who could, in many instances, be in the starting line-up on day one. While it would have been nice to add another line-backer, and a question remains as to the center position, credit the Bengals for generally not reaching, and picking up value wherever they could in this year’s draft. WR Mohammed Sanu should have an immediate impact in the passing game and could be fantasy football relevant at the start of the season. The arrow continues to point up for this young and up and coming team.
Believe it or not, the Browns had one of the best pass defenses in 2011 but their rush defense was lacking. The Browns biggest problem was getting points on the board. While QB Colt McCoy did well enough as a game manager, he did not look like a quarterback that the Browns could groom into their future starting quarterback. Further, the Browns need a genuine receiving threat and The Fantasy Greek sees the Browns drafting or signing a wide-receiver to add weapons to the offense. It’s very unclear whether the Browns will be resigning Peyton Hillis. However, they will likely have to if they cannot find a way to fill their more pressing positional needs. They’ll need some depth along the offensive line too.

UPDATE (MARCH 24, 2012): The Browns have been eerily quiet in free agency even though the Browns were associated with possibly making a push for a quarterback in free agency. For all practical purposes, the Browns are going to focus filling their needs through the draft, and to some extent, the secondary free agent market.
PRE-DRAFT UPDATE (APRIL 25, 2012): With 13 draft picks, it’s should feel like Christmas in April inCleveland. The Browns need a little bit of everything. While the need is greater at wide-receiver, the Browns should naturally take the best offensive player in the draft, and the one that should immediately contribute to the offense, with the fourth pick. Like the Browns to look to drafting a QB with their third or fourth pick. Depth is needed along the offensive line.

POST-DRAFT UPDATE: The Browns came out of the gate smoking with their first three draft picks. It seems that with the Browns drafting QB Brandon Weeden, QB Colt McCoy may not be this team’s starting quarterback at some point in 2012. Unfortunately, the Browns third and fourth picks were not very splashy and we’re not sure what the Browns see in WR Travis Benjamin as opposed to other wide receivers that were available in Round 4 at the same time, especially since the wide-receiver position was likely the team’s position of greatest need. Thereafter, the Browns did a good job drafting players for value. There is more work to be done, but this year’s draft appears to be, at the very least, a step in the right direction for the Browns even though the final draft rank may not reflect it.
The Ravens have had to purge their team of several players in order to get under the salary cap. Also, they are the victim of bad timing as key contracts (like Ray Rice) expired and Joe Flacco wants a contract extension. The Ravens are close to having the best team in the AFC. Their biggest needs will be on defense however. Their biggest need now is to add a solid cornerback, and another safety would be a plus. The Ravens offensive line also showed some weaknesses last season too. Adding to the unit will likely be a priority. While the Ravens certainly boast one of the best defenses in the league, it is getting long in the tooth and picking up players with the thought of them becoming replacements for Ray Lewis and Ed Reed, would be wise. Lastly, with the retirement of Ricky Williams, an RB for added depth will likely be a need as well. Also, with the release of Lee Evans, another receiving threat would be a bonus.
Top-Positional Needs: T, DE, NT, G, S, C, RB, WR, LB, QB, TE
Free Agency Signings
| Position, Player | Former Team |

UPDATE (MARCH 24, 2012): The biggest move the Ravens made was to re-sign C Matt Birk, which addressed their most important area of need. Otherwise, the Ravens plan appears to be to possibly re-sign some of their free agents at more affordable salaries, possibly after the draft. The Ravens suddenly became thin at the positions we’ve added to their list of needs above.
PRE-DRAFT UPDATE (APRIL 25, 2012): Had to sit back and look at the Ravens roster and realize that for the most part, this team missed going to the Super Bowl by one game. There are eight spots where depth is needed, and a few spots were there a few players heading towards the end of their careers. But, the feeling here is the Ravens should be able to cherry pick themselves a great group of players. The order of positions above may very well not be the order of the Ravens draft.
DRAFT PICKS:
| Round | Draft Pick | Pick | Overall |
| 2 | OLB Courtney Upshaw | 3 | 35 |
| 2 | T Kelechi Osemele | 28 | 60 |
| 3 | RB Bernard Pierce | 21 | 84 |
| 4 | G Gino Gradkowski | 3 | 98 |
| 4 | FS Christian Thompson | 35 | 130 |
| 5 | CB Asa Jackson | 34 | 169 |
| 6 | WR Tommy Streeter | 28 | 198 |
| 7 | DE Deangelo Tyson | 29 | 236 |
Raw Score: 4.375
Rank: 14th (T)
POST-DRAFT UPDATE: The Ravens first pick of OLB Courtney Upshaw in the second round was a good one as it solidified the team’s linebacker group, and Upshaw was worthy of a first round draft pick. Adding talent to the offensive line was certainly needed. RB Bernard Pierce will likely immediately contribute with Ricky Williams retiring and is almost a certain handcuff for fantasy footballers with Ray Rice on their roster. We like WR Tommy Streeter with a sixth round pick. This was a better draft for the Ravens than the raw score reflects. Yet, we are concerned that the heir apparent to Ray Lewis may not be in this draft class.
Much like the Ravens, the Steelers have purged their roster too due to salary cap issues and it’s been on the defensive side of the ball to boot. However, Ben Roethlisberger continued to run for his life most of the season. So, the Steelers would do well to add some depth and talent to the offensive line. With Rashard Mendehall possibly missing most if not all of the 2012 season, running back has become a position of need, especially in terms of depth. But, if the Steelers do not re-sign Mike Wallace, again an issue due to the salary cap, the wide-receiver position will leap frog the running back position in terms of need. They’ll need a back up quarterback too.
Top-Positional Needs: G, T, CB, NT, LB, DE, C, RB
UPDATE (MARCH 24, 2012): The Steelers have done nothing to address their needs at this time. They have allowed eleven of their players to become free agents and lost another six due to salary cap issues. Except at the guard and center positions, where they are lacking some back-ups, the Steelers have adequate depth. Yet, due to the recent salary cap purge, the question remains whether the depth they do have will translate to a good team on the field compared to the recent past. The Steelers need to get their restricted free agents which include two starting guards and WR Mike Wallace, signed.
PRE-DRAFT UPDATE (APRIL 25, 2012): The Steelers would do well to address their offensive line. It’s no secret Ben Roethlisberger was running for his life at times last season. Then, the Steelers need to address positions whereby veteran players are presently the starters. The Steelers should be able to address most but not all of these needs. There are some depth needs that may not be addressed in the draft.
DRAFT PICKS:
| Round | Draft Pick | Pick | Overall |
| 1 | G David DeCastro | 24 | 24 |
| 2 | T Mike Adams | 24 | 56 |
| 3 | LB Sean Spence | 23 | 86 |
| 4 | DT Ta’amu Alameda | 14 | 109 |
| 5 | RB Chris Rainey | 24 | 159 |
| 7 | WR Toney Clemons | 24 | 231 |
| 7 | TE David Paulson | 33 | 240 |
| 7 | CB Terrence Frederick | 39 | 246 |
| 7 | T Kelvin Beachum | 41 | 248 |
Raw Score: 4.333
Rank: 13th
POST-DRAFT UPDATE: We really liked what the Steelers did in this year’s draft as they addressed their most important area of need with their first two draft picks, as both G David DeCastro and T Mike Adams are immediate starters. In addition, T Mike Adams had first round value and fell to the Steelers in Round 2. Also, the Steelers next four picks provide immediate, needed depth. The Steelers final four seventh round picks look to have been well spent.
The Colts are at a cross road: stick with Peyton Manning for the next three to four years or place the future of the franchise on the shoulders of a rookie quarterback. Whatever the decision, the Colts have numerous needs. On defense, the Colts struggled defending both the pass and the rush and the unit was one of the worst defending either. On offense, the Colts are likely set at running back at least for next season. But, at the wide receiver position, they will have immediate needs should Reggie Wayne and Pierre Garcon not return. Also, the Colts need to upgrade an offensive line that was porous last season.

UPDATE (MARCH 24, 2012): Even though in rebuilding mode, and with the knowledge the Colts will be taking a quarterback with the first overall pick in this year’s draft, the Colts have already been making some good moves by signing a center to take the place vacated by Jeff Saturday, adding some additional offensive linemen to hopefully better protect their young rookie QB, and signing some defensive ball-hawks formerly of the Ravens. In a bit of a head scratcher, Reggie Wayne resigned with the team even with Peyton Manning moving on. More then likely,Wayne encountered a much softer market for his services than he expected. With both Jacob Tamme and Dallas Clark not expected back, the Colts will need tight-end help. Also, if RB Joseph Addai, who was released due to the salary cap, does not return, the Colts may have to find another running back given the injuries that have plagued the team’s running backs in the past. The Colts really just need to build depth right now and sign as many quality free agents as they can handle.
PRE-DRAFT UPDATE (APRIL 25, 2012): It’s no secret the Colts will need a little bit of everything. The Colts have done a great job in free agency starting to fill some of the holes, especially many of the additions of former players from the Ravens. The draft will be about picking the best available players with each pick.
DRAFT PICKS:
| Round | Draft Pick | Pick | Overall |
| 1 | QB Andrew Luck | 1 | 1 |
| 2 | TE Coby Fleener | 2 | 34 |
| 3 | TE Dwayne Allen | 1 | 64 |
| 3 | WR TY Hilton | 29 | 92 |
| 5 | DT Josh Chapman | 1 | 136 |
| 5 | RB Vick Ballard | 35 | 170 |
| 5 | WR LaVon Brazil | 36 | 206 |
| 7 | T Justin Anderson | 1 | 208 |

POST-DRAFT UPDATE: The Colts had so many roster needs in this draft, the expectation was they would draft the best available player in each round of the draft. Obviously, we knew QB Andrew Luck would be the first overall pick. The Colts did just fine adding TE Coby Fleener to replace Dallas Clark. However, when the Colts used their third pick on another tight-end, it certainly did not appear to be the most prudent use of such a high pick even though the value was there. Again, like some other teams above, the pick of WR TY Hilton, with so many other talents still available at that juncture of the draft, seemed a bit out of place. There were a couple of nice value adds too, but also a few picks where the Colts seemed to reach for value. Indeed, it was puzzling to add another quarterback with their last pick of the draft rather than sign one for camp. WR LaVonBrazil has a lot of upside. With the exception of two picks, the Colts ignored the defensive side of the ball. In the end, as the draft reflects, the Colts still have a lot of work to do to be the team that once dominated the division in years past.
The Jaguars defense wasn’t the worst in the league, but not the best either, especially their rush defense. While the Jaguars offense wasn’t the worst due to a strong running game, it struggled protecting the ball thanks to QB Blaine Gabbert turning the ball over. The Jaguars will focus their off-season efforts on improving their pass rush and pass defense, by adding a pass rusher and personnel in the secondary. Blaine Gabbert may not be long for the Jaguars but he is the best they have right now. An upgrade in play at the QB position, either through Gabbert or a free agent quarterback, would be a good thing. The Jaguars need receiving weapons. The Jaguars will likely seek another receiver to compliment young Mike Thomas and Marcedes Lewis. The Jaguars could also have a need at the right tackle position.
Top-Positional Needs: DE, WR, G, S, CB, QB, T
Free Agency Signings
| Position, Player | Former Team |
| WR Laurent Robinson | Cowboys |
| QB Chad Henne | Dolphins |
| CB Aaron Ross | Giants |
| WR Lee Evans | Ravens |
UPDATE (MARCH 24, 2012): Had the trade for Tim Tebow gonne through, it would have made the quarterback picture for the Jaguars interesting as they had already signed QB Chad Henne. One way or another, it looks like there will be a boost to the offense. QB Chad Henne will be giving Gabbert a run at the starting job and could be the Jaguars starter come opening day. While neither would be worthwhile fantasy football options come draft day, this should improve the play at the wide-receivers and tight-end position. Whether it becomes fantasy football relevant is another story. WR Laurent Robinson was a nice addition even though it remains to be seen if he can play the role of a legitimate No. 1 wide receiver. Likewise, CB Aaron Ross should help the Jaguars defend the pass. The Jaguars still have some work to do, but so far, the Jaguars are making steady, non-splashy moves to try to improve their roster.
PRE-DRAFT UPDATE (APRIL 25, 2012): The Jaguars had one of the better defenses in the league and a defensive end that pressures the quarterback would help immensely. It is hoped the recent addition of WR Lee Evans will help the passing game, but the Jaguars could definitely use another receiving target. Next, if Blaine Gabbert is to have a chance, the Jaguars need to protect him.
DRAFT PICKS:
| Round | Draft Pick | Pick | Overall |
| 1 | WR Justin Blackmon | 5 | 5 |
| 2 | DE Andre Branch | 6 | 38 |
| 3 | P Bryan Anger | 7 | 70 |
| 5 | OLB Brandon Marshall | 7 | 142 |
| 6 | CB Mike Harris | 6 | 176 |
| 7 | DT Jeris Pendleton | 21 | 228 |
Raw Score: 4.167
Rank: 8th
POST-DRAFT UPDATE: The Jaguars had limited picks but seemed to make the most out of them especially by addressing their two most important area of needs in their first two picks. Getting DE Andre Branch, who had first round value, in the second round was a great addition to the defensive line. Of course, expending a third-round pick on a punter was a shocker unless P Bryan Anger is the second coming of Ray Guy. Otherwise, we are definitely concerned that the Jaguars failed to add an offensive guard, a position where depth is needed on their roster. So, while the Jaguars may have done fine in maximizing the value of their picks, there are still roster needs that need to be addressed. Ignoring the offensive line in the draft could be a big mistake. WR Justin Blackmon will obviously be on fantasy football radars when most fantasy drafts happen.
The Texans were at one point this season, the best team in the AFC. But, then the injury bug hit. Even after Matt Schaub, Matt Leinhart, Andre Johnson, and Mario Williams were lost for all or part of the season, the Texans still made he playoffs. This is a case of the Texans trying to keep the band together. Now that the Texans signed RB Arian Foster to a multi-year deal, the Texans have their hands full re-signing LB Mario Williams to a long-term deal. If the Texans could improve their offensive line, they could do a better job protecting Matt Schaub on passing downs. Also, no wide-receiver stepped up their game when WR Andre Johnson was out for part of the season. If the Texans had a complimentary receiver for Andre Johnson, the offense would be formidable. Another running back and some secondary help would be a good depth building move.
Top-Positional Needs: C, T, WR, G, LB, S, CB, DE, K, TE, RB, QB
Free Agency Signings
| Position, Player | Former Team |
| LB Bradie James | Cowboys |
| P Donnie Jones | Rams |
UPDATE (MARCH 24, 2012): The biggest news for the Texans is that they lost several key players from the 2011 Division Championship team not only due to free agency, but also due to their own salary cap issues: DE Mario Williams, T Eric Winston, RB Derrick Ward, and TE Joel Dreessen. K Neil Rackers is also a free agent. The Texans also traded LB DeMeco Ryans to the Eagles. Since free agency opened, the Texans have not signed one player. It looks like the Texans needs are depth driven right now. It also looks like the Texans are going to address their needs in the upcoming draft and by signing select free agents who do not carry with them a big salary. Whether this approach works remains to be seen, but it also may not be the approach of choice, but of circumstance.
PRE-DRAFT UPDATE (APRIL 25, 2012): The Texans did well to re-sign C Chris Myers to help shore up an offensive line that sustained some key losses. While you would think the Texans would focus their attention initially on the offensive line, the Texans could go wide-receiver in round one of the draft. We love the Texans defense, but depth is needed. Other positions where depth is required includes: QB, RB, and TE. By the way, K Neil Rackers signed with the Redskins. The Texans will need a kicker too.
DRAFT PICKS:
| Round | Draft Pick | Pick | Overall |
| 1 | DE Whitney Mercilus | 26 | 26 |
| 3 | WR DeVier Posey | 5 | 68 |
| 3 | G Brandon Brooks | 13 | 76 |
| 4 | C Ben Jones | 4 | 99 |
| 4 | WR Keshawn Martin | 26 | 121 |
| 4 | DT Jared Crick | 31 | 126 |
| 5 | K Randy Bullock | 26 | 161 |
| 6 | OT Nick Mondek | 25 | 195 |
Raw Score: 4.375
Rank: 14th(T)
POST-DRAFT UPDATE: The Texans had one of the best defenses in the league last season even after DE Mario Williams went down to injury. That’s why when the Texans drafted DE Whitney Mercilus with their first overall pick, there was a collective silence of shock among those watching the NFL draft. Still, it was a solid pick. Oddly, even though the Texans next pick wasn’t until Round 3, the Texans picked up WR DeVier Posey. Wide receiver was a top need in this draft for the Texans. The pick was odd only insofar as there were other wide receivers expected to go before Posey. Yet, Posey was a fantastic player when he did play in college. So, if Posey plays as he did in college, he should pair well with Andre Johnson. Posey could also be fantasy football relevant on opening day. As to the remainder of the picks, they were generally solid, without any reaching. DT Jared Crick has a lot of value given when he was drafted. The Fantasy Greek likes that the Texans addressed the offensive line in the draft. The Texans still have other needs but these will be addressed through free agency.
The Titans lacked defensive and offensive consistency in 2011. The Titans rush defense wasn’t very good. Their biggest need on that side of the ball is improving their rush defense and pressuring the quarterback. Expect the Titans to add another line backer and look for them to draft a run stuffing defensive tackle. As it looks like the Titans will not be re-signing CB Cortland Finnegan, defensive back will be an area of immediate need. Also, there is a need to improve their offensive line play especially in the running game. Offensively, the Titans are likely set.
Top-Positional Needs: DT, LB, C, G, DE, DB, S
Free Agency Signings
| Position, Player | Former Team |
| G Steve Hutchinson | Vikings |
| DE Kamerion Wimbley | Raiders |
UPDATE (MARCH 24, 2012): Sure it would have been great for the Titans to have signed Peyton Manning, but they were solid at the position already. Nonetheless, the Titans must have read The Fantasy Greek’s previous AFC Needs article because even though the Titans made just two free agent signings, they were significant free agent signings, helping both the offensive side and the defensive side of the ball. Hutchinson should make an immediate impact in helping a Titans run game that floundered at times last season. Wimbley should bring the added pressure the defensive unit was lacking last season. While the Titans still have some needs to address in the off-season, they have acted like a thoughtful NFL team so far in free agency. It’ll be interesting to see what they do over the course of the remainder of free agency and the upcoming draft.
PRE-DRAFT UPDATE (APRIL 25, 2012): For the most part, the Titan’s draft should about defense, defense, and defense.
DRAFT PICKS:
| Round | Draft Pick | Pick | Overall |
| 1 | WR Kendall Wright | 20 | 20 |
| 2 | OLB Zach Brown | 20 | 52 |
| 3 | DT Mike Martin | 19 | 82 |
| 4 | CB Coty Sensabaugh | 20 | 115 |
| 5 | TE Taylor Thompson | 10 | 145 |
| 6 | FS Markelle Martin | 20 | 190 |
| 7 | DE Scott Solomon | 4 | 211 |
Raw Score: 4.286
Rank: 11th (T)
POST-DRAFT UPDATE: With the exception of two picks, the Titans draft was about the defense. The Titans did a nice job adding depth to their roster. However, we were a bit stunned the Titans drafted WR Kendall Wright with their first overall pick given that they appear set on offense. This could be due to the fact that Kenny Britt is coming off injury or that the Titans feel that Wright would add an additional dimension to three receiver sets. Whatever the case, this is a situation to monitor as Wright could have a fantasy football impact this season. We like the FS Markelle Martin pick in Round 6, as he was likely a player that could have gone earlier in the draft and could play sooner rather than later.
The Broncos defense was a leaking sieve for a part of last season but then, the defense started to lock down on some of its opponents. Still, this is a team intended to be a defense first team under John Fox. Expect the Broncos to address the linebacker position and defensive line in this year’s draft in terms of depth. In addition, Champ Bailey is not getting any younger. As such, the Broncos should look to get younger with some Bailey heir-apparent through this year’s draft. With the Broncos sporting some of the better young wide receivers in the league, if the right running back is out there, the Broncos would do well to add another one to back-up injury prone Willis McGahee and Knowshon Moreno. With the Broncos also likely to be a run first team, the Broncos will look to improve the offensive line by adding any good run blockers available. The addition of pass-receiving tight-end would be a plus. The Fantasy Greek thinks the Broncos are set at quarterback for at least one more season, whether it’s Tim Tebow or another quarterback brought in through free agency.
Top-Positional Needs: DT, DE, RB, G, C, CB, S, TE

| QB Caleb Hanie | Bears |
| T Justin Bannan | Ravens |
UPDATE (MARCH 24, 2012): The Fantasy Greek already commented on how Peyton Manning’s signing would impact the Broncos players in fantasy football. But then, the Broncos added TE Jacob Tamme and TE Joel Dreessen, solid additions and upgrades at the position. Tamme is the likely candidate to get the work in passing situations and his stock is rising for fantasy football purposes. Now that the Broncos addressed their pass defense, they will need to address the gut of the defense, over the middle. They are going to need some depth at the defensive end position and at the quarterback position. There is also only one center on the roster right now. It was a shocker C Jeff Saturday did not follow Manning to the Broncos. The Broncos have done well in free agency.
PRE-DRAFT UPDATE (APRIL 25, 2012): With S Brian Dawkins retiring, the Broncos will likely need to address the position. The draft is one way to do it and the other is to trade for Asante Samuel. Otherwise, the Broncos need run stuffers and if they can score a good running back to provide depth to a group of running backs that have been injury prone, that would be a good thing.
DRAFT PICKS:
| Round | Draft Pick | Pick | Overall |
| 2 | DT Derek Wolfe | 4 | 36 |
| 2 | QB Brock Osweiler | 25 | 57 |
| 3 | RB Ronnie Hillman | 4 | 67 |
| 4 | CB Omar Bolden | 6 | 101 |
| 4 | C Philip Blake | 13 | 108 |
| 5 | DT Malik Jackson | 2 | 137 |
| 6 | OLB Danny Trevathan | 18 | 188 |
Raw Score: 4.286
Rank: 11th (T)
POST-DRAFT UPDATE: The Broncos didn’t have a draft pick until Round 2 but immediately drafted a player to fit their most important position of need with DT Derek Wolfe. Then, the Broncos drafted a potential Manning heir-apparent, QB Brock Osweiler. RB Ronnie Hillman adds needed depth at the running back position where Broncos running backs have sustained their share of injuries over the years. Hillman could get a chance to make an impact in the offense this season and is worth monitoring for fantasy football purposes. The Broncos couldn’t address every need as there just weren’t enough picks to go around. Overall, the Broncos did a great job addressing their needs and look to have gotten good value along the way.
The Chargers were a real head-scratcher last season. The Chargers were a good team on paper but underperforming on the field. From the 2010 season, we know the Chargers can play well without WR Vincent Jackson but he would be a good player for the Chargers to keep. If they do not, the position will be an immediate need. Likewise, if the Chargers can’t retain RB Mike Tolbert, the Chargers will need to add another running back behind Ryan Mathews who has had his share of injury problems. Similarly, while TE Antonio Gates is one of the best tight-ends in the league, the Chargers do not have a back-up of similar talents should he miss any more time due to his lingering foot issues. While the Chargers have a good defense, they need to add depth to the entire unit and upgrade where they can. The offensive line needs help with Kris Dielman retiring and there being potential depth issues. The Chargers need a lot of help.
Top-Positional Needs: LB, C, T, G, RB, S, CB, DT, DE, TE, QB
Free Agency Signings
| Position, Player | Former Team |
| C Nick Hardwick | Chargers |
| WR Robert Meachem | Saints |
| WR-KR Eddie Royal | Broncos |
| TE Dante Rosario | Broncos |
| QB Charlie Whitehurst | Seahawks |
| FB LeRon McClain | Chiefs |
| LB Jarrett Johnson | Ravens |
| LB Demorrio Williams | Chiefs |
| S Atari Bigby | Seahawks |
| WR Roscoe Parrish | Bills |
| WR Michael Spurlock | Buccaneers |
UPDATE (MARCH 24, 2012): The Chargers allowed thirteen players to become free agents and released another seven due to salary cap issues. The Chargers biggest signing was the re-signing of C Nick Hardwick. If the Chargers had failed to sign him, the entire offensive line would have been in trouble as there would have been no depth at the center position as well as along the entire right side of the line. Now, the issues are more depth related. Still, the Chargers are going to need some help. With the loss of RB Mike Tolbert, RB Ryan Mathews is going to get the majority of the work in the rush offense. FB LeRon McClain will help. Otherwise, the Chargers are going to need to add depth to the position. With WR Vincent Jackson leaving to sign with the Buccaneers, the signing of WR Robert Meachum was intriguing as was the signing of WR-KR Eddie Royal. Certainly, this is Meachum’s opportunity to show he can be a No. 1 receiver in reality, and in fantasy football. Obviously, the opportunity is there. (Read more about wide receiver signing.) Likewise, the signing of receiving tight-end Dante Dosario was a good move too so if TE Antonio misses anymore time, the Chargers would still have a weapon in the passing game. On defense, the Chargers addressed the middle of the defense through free agency. The Chargers still have work to do.
PRE-DRAFT UPDATE (APRIL 25, 2012): A real impact player, like a linebacker on defense, would likely do wonders for the Chargers in the first round of the draft. After the starters in the secondary, there is hardly any depth. The Chargers only have two running backs on the roster and no third quarterback. A few key draftees, would help the Chargers immensely.
DRAFT PICKS:
| Round | Draft Pick | Pick | Overall |
| 1 | DE Melvin Ingram | 18 | 18 |
| 2 | DT Kendall Reyes | 17 | 49 |
| 3 | SS Brandon Taylor | 10 | 73 |
| 4 | TE Ladarius Green | 15 | 110 |
| 5 | G Johnnie Troutman | 14 | 149 |
| 7 | C David Molk | 19 | 226 |
| 7 | RB Edwin Baker | 43 | 250 |
Raw Score: 4.143
Rank: 7th
POST-DRAFT UPDATE: The Chargers did a great job with their first two picks, drafting quality first rounders in DE Melvin Ingram and DT Kendall Reyes. Ingram is listed on the depth chart as an outside line-backer and Reyes as defensive end. While the Chargers seemed to reach a little bit with two of their next five picks, the other three were value type additions to the roster. RB Edwin Baker could have a larger role in the offense if the injury bug should hit. The Chargers will address any remaining needs through free agent signings. This was a solid draft for the Chargers.
The Fantasy Greek thought the Chiefs looked real good last off-season. Here’s what we wrote last year:
Starting quarterback with stud potential — Check. Stud running backs — Check. One of the best wide-receivers in the league — Check. Young promising tight-end — Check. Young, up and coming defense — Check.
In 2011, the Chiefs were riddled with injury to their key personal and were suddenly exposed, especially on the offensive side of the ball. The Chiefs defense struggled in 2011 but matters were made worse by an offense that couldn’t put points on the board. If the Chiefs can, they need to build quality depth at the running back position and at the quarterback position. With Dwayne Bowe back, The Fantasy Greek believes that the Chiefs need to add to the offensive line because if there was anything which caused Matt Cassel to struggle, it was the constant pressure he was under at times. Moreover, the Chiefs running game wasn’t the greatest even before RB Jamaal Charles season ending injury. Once this is addressed, whatever help they can get on the defensive side of the ball would be a good idea as they struggled shutting down the rush, finishing towards the bottom of the league.
Top-Positional Needs: NT, LB, G, C, T, RB, QB, CB, S
Free Agency Signings
| Position, Player | Former Team |
| T Eric Williams | Texans |
| RB Peyton Hillis | Browns |
| TE Kevin Boss | Seahawks |
| QB Brady Quinn | Broncos |
| CB Stanford Routt | Raiders |
UPDATE (MARCH 24, 2012): The Chiefs had a bunch of salary cap space but made measured, instead of real splashy, additions to the team. The biggest addition was that of T Eric Williams, formerly of the Texans, who had one of the best rushing attacks in the league. Having learned from the loss of Jamaal Charles due to season ending injury last season, the Chiefs also did well to add RB Peyton Hillis. While both Charles’ and Hillis’ fantasy football value take a bit of a hit, from a football perspective, this was a coup. TE Kevin Boss gives the Chiefs a credible red-zone weapon. While QB Brady Quinn is no Peyton Manning, or Kyle Orton for that matter, Romeo Crennel knows of him from his Browns’ days, so there is something to be said that is positive about the signing. CB Stanford Routt was a nice addition too especially since the Chiefs lost CB Brandon Carr to the Cowboys. Now, the Chiefs need to continue building their roster, especially along the offensive line which lacks depth at the tackle and guard positions.
PRE-DRAFT UPDATE (APRIL 25, 2012): Head Coach Romeo Crennel has a defensive mindset, so the Chiefs should be looking for a high impact player in the first round, like a linebacker. After that, the offensive lines and defensive lines needs to be addressed. Besides wide-receiver and tight-end, all other positions are in need of added depth and upgrades where possible.
DRAFT PICKS:
| Round | Draft Pick | Pick | Overall |
| 1 | DT Dontari Poe | 11 | 11 |
| 2 | T Jeff Allen | 12 | 44 |
| 3 | T Donald Stephenson | 11 | 74 |
| 4 | WR Devon Wylie | 12 | 107 |
| 5 | CB DeQuan Menzie | 11 | 146 |
| 6 | RB Cyrus Gray | 12 | 182 |
| 7 | DT Jerome Long | 11 | 218 |
| 7 | WR Junior Hemingway | 31 | 238 |
Raw Score: 4.625
Rank: 23rd
POST-DRAFT UPDATE: The Chiefs solidified the gut of the defensive line with their first pick of DT Dontari Poe and added some good depth along the offensive line. However, the Chiefs seemed to reach a bit in the middle of the draft in terms of value adds. The addition of RB Cyrus Gray late in the draft was fortunate. All in all, we expected a bit more from the Chiefs, and adding not one, but two more wide-receivers to the offense was odd, to say the least. The Chiefs have the building blocks of a really good team even though this may not have been one of the greatest of drafts.
The Raiders surprised the league last season yet again, with what was for all practical purposes, a solid season even after suffering numerous injuries, especially to the running back and quarterback position. Unfortunately, the Raiders are forced to jettison some of their personnel due to being well over the salary cap. The Raiders defense had its good moments, but otherwise struggled at both rush and pass defense. So, The Fantasy Greek believes they would do well to draft a young run stuffer and another pass defense talent. With Michael Bush and Jason Campbell expected to be gone in free agency, the Raiders will need running back and quarterback depth. While the Raiders offensive line did well in the running game, they still weren’t the greatest in pass protection. Whatever offensive lineman is available, will also be on the Raiders’ radar. The Raiders are set at wide receiver. But, they’ll need a back-up quarterback.

| DE Dave Tollefson | Forty-Niners |
| LB Philip Wheeler | Colts |
UPDATE (MARCH 24, 2012): If you thought other teams had bad salary cap situations, the Raiders seemed to have the worst allowing fourteen players to become free agents and releasing six players due to salary cap concerns. This has created depth issues center and safety, but more so at the linebacker position. The signings so far have not been flashy. The Raiders have their work cut out for them and likely have their hopes resting on adding players once salary requests become more reasonable. Yet, it’s hard not believe that this team will be made up of players who have been looking for the opportunity to get significant playing time. These players will likely get their chance. With the loss of RB Michael Bush to free agency, RB Taiwan Jones is going to get some opportunities in the offense to shine in relief of Darren McFadden or if McFadden goes down to injury again.
PRE-DRAFT UPDATE (APRIL 25, 2012): The Raiders don’t pick until Round 3, pick 95. They only have five draft picks. So, for the Raiders, their draft picks need to count. With all the cornerbacks the Raiders signed, the Raiders will look to improve the gut of the defense (especially if they do in fact switch to a 3-4 defense) and add depth to the offensive line. The Raiders could draft another RB and TE for depth or simply sign players in free agency post-draft. The Raiders will not be in a good place if any of their starters get injured, and the back-ups don’t step up.
DRAFT PICKS:

| 7 | OLB Nathan Stupar | 23 | 230 |
Raw Score: 5.667

POST-DRAFT UPDATE: The Fantasy Greek didn’t expect the Raiders to have the greatest of value driven drafts given that their first pick was not until Round 3 and given that the Raiders only had six draft picks to work with, even after the compensatory picks they were awarded. The Raiders did do a good job of building depth but the impact of the additions remains to be seen given how late the Raiders drafted. The Fantasy Greek likes the WR Juron Criner pick. Yet, in the end, it seemed like the Raiders could have filled different needs through the draft.

Glad you showed the Browns some love, Weeden wasn’t an automatic love for me. But he has started to grow. The Wide Receiver Core has to be the biggest position that will be highlighted throughout the year. Little plus whomever else has to step up. I think they will since the word on the street has been that Weeden throws a more catchable ball than McCoy. Great analysis!
Sportologist, thanks. Really like what the Browns did with this draft. The Browns are headed in the right direction and next season’s draft will only help.
