As you know, the wide receiver position has been transformed by the movement away from a focus on the running game to a focus on the passing game, as well as the relaxed rules favoring the passing game. Since our last rankings, several players are coming off injury (Hakeem Nicks, Sidney Rice, Torrey Smith) and a couple of others are expected to be back from injury or their off-the-field issues by Week 1 (Dez Bryant, Miles Austin, Kenny Britt, and Mike Wallace). Last week, The Fantasy Greek asked whether anyone else thought Maurice Jones-Drew will would continue to holdout into the regular season? At thi point, it doesn’t really matter because the Jaguars have indicated that even if MJD returned this week, he could be held out in Week1, and possibly thereafter. As for Ryan Mathews, he seems to be convalescing well from his broken collarbone and it is looking more and more possible that Mathews could be available in Week 1, or, maybe within a few weeks thereafter. Last but not least, it’s time to rank the all important wide receiver position in fantasy football. The wide receiver position which has also been transformed by the movement to more of a passing game in the NFL, as well as the relaxed rules favoring the passing game.
In days past, for the most part, you could have ranked the top fantasy football wide receivers by ranking the top wide receiver on each of the 32 NFL teams first, along with a little more than a handful of complimentary receivers, in the top-forty. Today, this is simply not the case. “Complimentary” receivers like Wes Welker, Victor Cruz, Jordy Nelson, and Antonio Brown, have made their mark in fantasy football so much so, that to rank both the “X” and the “Z” receiver high up on fantasy football draft boards comes as no surprise. Tight-ends are making one of the biggest impacts in professional offenses as well as fantasy football. As mentioned in The Fantasy Greek’s quarterbacks rankings, in a new era where passing the football in the NFL is king, the greatest challenge for fantasy football players is finding the “Solution to Dilution.” With rules crafted to protect quarterbacks, and with rules giving wide receivers and tight-ends more opportunity to catch the football and make plays, you have to look at adding a quality tight-end sooner, rather than later, in your fantasy football drafts.
