Fantasy Points Allowed by Offensive Position (Week 2) – QB, RB, WR, TE

It’s time for The Fantasy Greek to roll out the fantasy points allowed tool for the 2012 fantasy football season.  For those of you not familiar with it, fantasy points allowed is an average of the fantasy points allowed by a team’s defense to the other team’s position players, in this case, quarterbacks, running backs, wide receivers, and tight-ends. It is intended to help you identify when your position players have a favorable fantasy football match-up versus an unfavorable fantasy football match-up.

After one week of football, it likely doesn’t make much sense.  For example just because the Chiefs allowed 41.45 fantasy points to their week one opponent’s quarterback, the Falcon’s Matt Ryan, doesn’t mean they will allow the same amount of fantasy points to their week two opponent, the Bills’ Ryan Fitzpatrick. However, it is a helpful measurement insofar as we know Ryan Fitzpatrick will be facing a team whose pass defense got torched in Week 1. It suggests a favorable match-up for him.

While The Fantasy Greek preaches playing the fantasy football players with the best match-ups, don’t check your common sense at the door. Just because a player may have a better match-up does not mean you should bench your stud player.  So, if Matt Ryan is your QB1, do not bench him and play Ryan Fitzpatrick. Ryan has a decent to favorable match-up against the Broncos, in a game that should turn into a track meet, and sports the much better wide receivers.

The Fantasy Greek has also provided each team’s rank as of Week 16 in 2011 for comparison purposes which could help you understand whether a team’s performance last week could be an anomaly or a sign that they are simply that good or bad.  In another example, RB Kevin Smith torched the Rams rush defense.  This week, he faces a staunch 49ers rush defense that allowed the second least fantasy points last week, and allowed the least fantasy points last season.  This is a week to bench Kevin Smith and avoid him at all costs.  The only way to play him is if you have absolutely no other options.

Once we get to Week 4, there should be enough information in the average whereby we get a sense of where a team is in terms of defending each position.  Then, with each passing week, we’ll note the rank from three weeks earlier so you can get a sense of whether there are any temporal shifts in a team’s defense of a particular position, i.e., their defense of the position has improved or gotten worse.

As the season progresses, the range by position will “flatten.”  The range of most fantasy points allowed to least fantasy points allowed, from high to low should be roughly as follows by position:

Quarterbacks: 27 on the high end to 13 on the low end

Running Backs: 25 on the high end to 10 on the low end

Wide Receivers: 29 on the high end to 14 on the low end

Tight-Ends: 10 on the high end to 3 on the low end

Good luck this week!
